A preview selection from an archive of more than 200 original handwritten prison letters sent from California state prisons between the 2000s and 2010s. Written by incarcerated gang members, many of the letters follow the same individuals over several years as they transfer between institutions including Pelican Bay, Salinas Valley, and Calipatria State Prison, documenting changes in their daily lives, relationships, and prison experiences. The correspondence includes letters exchanged between inmates, primarily between two Crip members, as well as letters to relatives and loved ones. Subjects range from prison politics, transfers, loyalty, and personal struggles to surprisingly ordinary conversations about exercise routines, family matters, and hopes for life after release. Together, the collection provides a rare longitudinal insight into daily life inside California's prison system, preserving authentic voices and personal experiences that are seldom documented outside official correctional records.
