Description

The composition features a large hourglass framed by classical columns above a winding mountainous pathway, a clock face, prison bars, city imagery, theatrical masks, a devotional female figure resembling the Virgin Mary, and the phrase “Good Times Bad Times.” The name “Ruben” appears prominently across the top.

A series of scrolls along the right side records the years 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002, followed by an unfinished final scroll marked with a question mark. Together with the hourglass and clock imagery, the dates appear to reference the passage of time during incarceration. The unresolved final scroll may symbolize an uncertain release date, the possibility of an extended sentence, or more generally, the unpredictability of prison life rather than a fixed, documented release date.

On the left, an inmate appears to be crying behind prison bars. Above him, a second muscular inmate figure raises a clenched fist, with what appear to be broken or opened restraints at the wrist, while a prison guard tower rises behind him. These elements reinforce the broader themes of confinement, resistance, endurance, and the passage of time.

The pano appears to be signed and dated 1999, though the inscription is difficult to read clearly.

Provenance Note

The corners retain visible adhesive residue and mounting marks, indicating that the pano was most likely displayed after confiscation rather than simply stored. Similar adhesive traces appear on other panos in the collection that were reportedly hung in correctional officers’ offices or gang-investigation units as confiscated “trophies.” While the exact location of display cannot be confirmed, the surviving corner marks strongly support a history of institutional mounting and display.
