Description

Original prison-issued insulated drinking cup intricately hand-engraved by a Sureño inmate at Chino State Prison during the late 1990s. The illustrations were etched directly into the plastic using a prison-made tattoo machine, the same improvised devices commonly used to produce California's distinctive black-and-grey prison gang tattoos. The cup is covered with classic prison artwork, including clown faces aiming pistols, naked women, a romantic couple, and other personal imagery characteristic of Southern California prison art of the era. This style of engraving closely mirrors the visual language found in Chicano prison tattooing, where fine-line illustrations were created with improvised single-needle tattoo machines assembled from everyday prison materials.

Unlike paper drawings or tattoo flash, etched prison cups required many hours of painstaking work and were highly personal possessions, often serving as both functional items and portable canvases that reflected an inmate's artistic ability, identity, and prison environment. This example was later confiscated by a California law enforcement gang unit during an investigation and retained as a reference and trophy piece.
