Incarcerated Sureño-affiliated prison gang member within the California prison system. While individual Hispanic street gangs retain their local identities on the street, incarcerated Southern California gang members traditionally align under the broader Sureño prison affiliation.

Description

Prison-made paño art, combining themes of romance, sexuality, and Mesoamerican cultural imagery. At the center of the composition sits a female figure surrounded by an intricate arrangement of Aztec-inspired motifs, including a detailed calendar stone, temple pyramid, ceremonial mask imagery, and stylized indigenous ornamentation. To the right, an embracing couple reinforces themes of intimacy, longing, and personal relationships, subjects frequently explored in prison artwork created during long periods of separation from family and loved ones.

Provenance

This artwork was reportedly displayed as a wall-mounted “trophy” within an LAPD gang unit office. Residual adhesive marks visible at each corner are consistent with prolonged wall display and were confirmed by the gang unit officer from whom the piece was acquired.
