Description

Hand-drawn prison artwork executed in ink and colored pencil on a Crescent illustration board. The composition depicts a solitary inmate seated inside a prison cell, gazing toward the crucified Christ as rays of light illuminate the scene. Across the top, elaborate red calligraphy features the biblical passage: "Awake you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light," a quotation from Ephesians 5:14. The artwork combines Christian symbolism with Chicano prison art traditions through the inclusion of an Aztec calendar stone, theatrical masks, scrolls marking significant years of incarceration, and detailed tattoo work on the inmate's arm.
