Manufactured by an incarcerated individual for close-quarters combat within a correctional facility.

Description

Improvised prison shank fashioned from the folded lid of a metal food can. Rather than being ground into a conventional blade, the can lid was folded over to create a more rigid, reinforced edge while retaining its naturally sharp perimeter. Such improvised weapons exemplify the resourcefulness required in environments where manufactured weapons were unavailable and possession of any sharpened object carried severe disciplinary consequences. Constructed from discarded institutional materials, can lids were among the many everyday items repurposed into concealed weapons within correctional facilities, reflecting the constant adaptation and survival culture of prison life.
