Description

A hand-drawn prison pano executed in ink on cloth, featuring the large block-letter inscription "LOGAN" with the numerals "1904" incorporated into the central lettering. Decorative Chicano calligraphy appears on both sides of the main inscription. The bold three-dimensional lettering and ornamental script are characteristic of Southern California Chicano prison artwork

Notes

The "LOGAN" inscription refers to the Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego, California, home to the long-established Logan Heights street gang. The incorporated date 1904 references the founding of the Logan Heights community and is a recurring symbol within Logan Heights iconography. The stylized side inscriptions appear to identify a specific clique or neighborhood designation within Logan Heights, though the script is difficult to interpret with certainty. Such lettered panos were commonly produced within the California prison system as expressions of neighborhood pride, identity, and gang affiliation.

Provenance Note

The adhesive mounting pads on the reverse were added after confiscation to facilitate display. According to the former gang unit officer from whom the piece was obtained, the pano was mounted on the wall of a police gang unit office as a trophy following an enforcement operation.
